Daniel provides comprehensive wealth planning advice, focusing on minimizing federal, international, state, and local taxes to help clients live fulfilling lives, support charitable activities, and raise capable, responsible children.
Daniel has extensive experience advising general partners of private equity, venture capital, and other funds on the unique tax attributes and planning opportunities available to fund managers. He frequently works with business founders, providing guidance on valuation and qualified small business stock opportunities.
Fluent in Japanese, Daniel advises clients with Japanese and other cross-border contacts on tax and estate planning matters. His expertise includes navigating Japanese inheritance taxes on U.S. assets, qualifying Japanese estates for foreign estate treatment, and implementing cross-border estate plans. He also advises Japanese companies on U.S. transactions, including mergers and acquisitions.
A frequent speaker on jurisdictional aspects of personal and trust residency, Daniel helps domestic and international clients implement trust structures in suitable jurisdictions to achieve their tax and family wealth planning goals.
Daniel represents trustees, executors, and beneficiaries in trust and estate administration and litigates disputes between trustees and beneficiaries. He has litigated throughout California and in Manhattan’s Surrogate's Court. Daniel has resolved trust and probate litigation matters, defended trustees’ conduct, and interpreted tax allocation clauses. Additionally, he has prepared federal estate and gift tax returns and represented fiduciaries before the IRS in audits and appeals concerning valuation and other tax issues.
